This is not about changing the system.
It’s about changing our relationship to the system……by changing ourselves.
Why do a blog?
Let’s face it. A lot of us in medicine are unhappy.
Really unhappy.
There are so many stressors of our job. Pressure to work faster and harder and later. Difficult patients. Cynical colleagues. Increasing costs and decreasing pay. It’s no wonder that there is a crisis of dissatisfaction in medicine.
Data out of the United States shows that satisfaction is truly decreasing in medicine. A 2012 survey of 24000 doctors found only that 54% would choose their jobs if they could go back now.
Would you?
This career comes with its huge share of stressors, time commitment and negative impacts on life. Sometimes I think I’d be much better off if I’d done something else. I’d certainly sleep easier without all of the years of nights and call.
But I really love what I do. It’s given me so much. More than I’ve ever given back. Knowledge and skills that serve others in need. The ability to connect with other people in a way that very few others can. A window into a world that many never see. An opportunity to make a real difference in someone’s life.
So many people are still killing themselves to try and get into medical school. And yet so many of us that have made it through are miserable. Why?
Why don’t we realize how lucky we truly are?
Exploring this is what I’m hoping to make this blog about. How can we all, myself included, be more fulfilled with our work and lives?
This blog is not about changing the system. It’s about changing our relationship to the system…….by changing ourselves.
How can we take better care of ourselves so that we are able to take better care of others?
Let’s talk about it.
